Produced by Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione, Caligula was conceived as an ambitious, high-art, yet uncompromisingly graphic exploration of ancient Rome. Guccione aimed to merge sweeping historical drama with explicit adult cinema. However, the clash of visions was immediate. Director Tinto Brass shot the film with a chaotic, theatrical brilliance, but Guccione subsequently seized control of the editing suite after a falling out with Brass and Vidal, adding his own reshoots and explicit inserts.
